Twenty years later, we’re finally getting a sequel to The Simpsons movie. The belated sequel was revealed today and is aiming for a July 23rd, 2027, release date under Disney’s 20th Century Studios. No details on the plot have been shared yet, but expect Homer, Marge, Lisa, Bart, and Maggie to return, along with the other citizens of Springfield. The studio did tease the film with a poster that said, with the tagline “Homer’s coming back for seconds,” against the iconic pink donut with “2” sprinkles coating it.

Showrunner Matt Selman had this to say on the show’s longevity earlier in the summer with Variety, which has already been renewed up to season 40, which will air in 2029. “Now instead of the kids watching it on local TV in the afternoon, they can just watch it all, all the time, all day, all forever. Being on Disney+ has been somewhat rejuvenating for us. Not that we realized we needed rejuvenation, but we appreciate it.”
The film will take the spot of an unannounced Marvel film, which has seemingly been shelved for the time being, meaning there’ll be no MCU film in between the two upcoming Avengers films.
